Vertical Recruitment is working with a leading multidisciplinary consultancy that is looking to appoint a Mechanical Associate to join its Building Environments team in Manchester.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a close knit, collaborative team working on a varied portfolio of engaging and high profile projects across the UK and internationally. The role offers genuine scope to take ownership of projects, influence design direction and play a key role in the leadership and development of the mechanical team, while continuing to deliver innovative and sustainable building services solutions.

The Manchester Building Services team is involved in a wide range of challenging developments, including:

  • The delivery of a new 5,500 capacity stand at a historic football ground, incorporating hospitality, media and player facilities
  • A world class university library and teaching building located at the heart of a major campus
  • The first new build on a landmark city centre site, providing 500,000 ft² of high quality commercial office space alongside community facilities as part of a wider regeneration scheme

Projects are delivered within a holistic, multidisciplinary environment, with close collaboration across sustainability, façades, lighting and technology teams to push the boundaries of low carbon, high performance building design.

You will join the Manchester office as a Mechanical Associate, providing high quality design engineering services across a wide range of projects. While projects are primarily led from Manchester, you will also contribute to international work within the wider portfolio.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Contributing to the leadership of the mechanical team and taking on a project leadership role where required
  • Communicating directly with clients, offering innovative design solutions and managing expectations
  • Developing and strengthening relationships with clients, contractors, architects and developers
  • Preparing technical and financial proposals for new work
  • Managing the workload of engineers and technicians
  • Preparing technical specifications and design documentation
  • Monitoring the financial performance of projects and managing job and project administration, including resourcing and expenditure
  • Undertaking detailed mechanical building services design and calculations using Revit and IES
  • Supporting high quality, performance led design with an understanding of embodied and operational carbon
  • Embracing new technologies to improve building performance and support net zero carbon targets by 2030
  • Ensuring projects are delivered to an excellent standard, within agreed deadlines and budgets
  • Actively engaging with colleagues across disciplines, including involvement in internal discussions, events and seminars
  • Mentoring and supporting junior team members, with the potential to move into an early line management role

We are keen to speak with experienced Mechanical Engineers who can demonstrate:

  • Extensive mechanical design experience within an MEP consultancy environment, including experience acting as a project leader
  • Experience across a diverse range of sectors, ideally including large scale or complex projects
  • Strong interpersonal and organisational skills, with the ability to build and maintain client relationships
  • Professional registration with a relevant institution such as CIBSE or IMechE
  • A solid understanding of other building services disciplines alongside a mechanical specialism
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Broad design knowledge, including experience working to British, US and European codes of practice
  • Experience using industry standard analysis software such as Revit and IES, with the ability to quickly learn new tools
  • An interest in digital engineering, automation or coding, which would be advantageous
