Freelance Senior Quantity Surveyor
Location: Selby (Hybrid - 3 days per week on site)

Rate: £450-£500 per day
The Opportunity
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to join a major Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project. We are looking for a commercially driven professional with a strong contractor-side background who can take ownership of complex contractual matters and maximise commercial outcomes on a live infrastructure project.
Working as part of the commercial team, you'll play a key role in managing NEC contractual processes, leading commercial negotiations, and ensuring the business's contractual entitlement is fully protected.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the commercial management of a live BESS infrastructure project.
- Manage and administer NEC contracts, ensuring contractual obligations and entitlements are maintained.
- Prepare, assess and negotiate Compensation Events and variations.
- Build robust contractual submissions supported by clear evidence and programme impact.
- Manage and resolve subcontractor claims.
- Lead commercial negotiations with the client to achieve positive commercial outcomes.
- Challenge client assessments where appropriate and confidently defend contractual positions.
- Provide strategic commercial advice to the project and leadership teams.
- Attend and lead commercial meetings with clients and stakeholders.
Essential Experience
- Proven Senior Quantity Surveyor experience working for a principal contractor on major infrastructure, energy or civil engineering projects.
- Strong working knowledge of NEC contracts.
- Extensive experience managing:
- Compensation Events
- Variations
- Contractor claims
- Subcontractor claims
- Commercial negotiations
- Ability to produce well-reasoned contractual arguments supported by contractual entitlement.
- Confident negotiating with clients and senior stakeholders, with the credibility to challenge decisions where appropriate.
- Strong communication, influencing and stakeholder management skills.
