Job description

This is an extremely exciting client facing opportunity for an ambitious, highly motivated and reliable Structural Engineer to support the ongoing expansion of the Manchester team. You will manage complex projects, mentor junior staff and progress their career. The successful candidate is required to be highly organised and have a minimum of 5 years post graduate experience of working for a consultancy within the building structures sector.

The successful candidate will work alongside the office Director, in a positive work environment, to assist with the day-to-day management of the team, the running of small to large scale projects and support other Engineers within the business. The candidate will be responsible for a variety of projects from concept phase to completion, including all required client liaison, structural modelling, design team coordination, preparation /overseeing structural designs, calculations, reports, specifications and drawings.

The business can offer the opportunity to gain experience in a large variety of projects in different sectors, working in an open environment alongside experienced Engineers / Directors. You will be provided with opportunities to develop new skills, manage your own projects, whilst support will be delivered towards ongoing training needs and career development.

Skills and Responsibilities

A sound knowledge of structural engineering principles and relevant design codes of practice (Eurocodes), and the ability to apply these across all projects.

A sound knowledge of structural engineering materials, to include steel, concrete, timber and masonry.

A demonstrable experience of working on UK based projects, in accordance with UK Building Regulations and other relevant UK standards, across a range of the main industry sectors such as industrial, residential, retail, commercial and healthcare.

The candidate must be a team player, with excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and the desire to work collaboratively to achieve the best results possible.

Highly motivated, passionate and with an attention to detail.

Essential experience of structural design software including, but not limited to, Tekla Structural Designer.

Sound appreciation of BIM, and proven track record of successfully delivering projects collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

The desire and ambition to promote the company from within. This may involve representing CCS Consulting at external networking and social events.

Relevant degree qualification – BEng/MEng Civil/Structural engineering (accredited).

The successful candidate will be Chartered, or very near Chartered, with the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE).

The role will generally be office based, but the candidate will be required to travel around the UK to attend design meetings and site visits, and other offices on occasion.

Full Driving Licence preferred.

With the added benefit of a hybrid working policy, you will be office based 2/3 days a week with a requirement for local site visits as required.

The role:
Pre-contract
” Attend client briefing meetings
” Review current scope of works
” Cost planning preparation including; inputting, measuring, issuing, and presenting
” Review contractor proposals in detail including costs and quantities
” Clarify and issue tender addendums if required
” Meet with contractors and discuss proposals
” Review, query and agree contract sum
” Prepare contract documents and share with relevant stakeholders
” Ensure the contract documentation is signed and in place before commencement on site

Post-contract
” Attend prestart meetings
” Prepare and issue monthly valuations

  • Ability to produce 2D & 3D Building Services design deliverables from concept through to fully co-ordinated detailed design
  • Familiar with assurance processes, codes of practice, standards and relevant sections of statutory documentation
  • Ability to liaise and co-ordinate with clients, Architects and all other members of the Design Team.
  • Experience of clash detection/resolution process using both Navisworks and Revit.
  • Knowledge of Cobie Data applicable to M&E drawings
  • Eligible to pass criteria for security clearance

Principal/ Associate Structural Engineer – Manchester

Vertical Recruitment are working closely with a well sought after multidisciplinary consultancy, they have 14 offices across the UK, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Their team of civil and structural engineers are nationally recognised for delivering sustainable and integrated design.

Due to growth, their Manchester C&S team has a need for an Principal/Associate Engineer who is not just a people leader, but someone who can also be that technical sounding board to the team, applying your experience to support in solving design problems the team may be facing.

You will lead large C&S project teams or a number or smaller teams and help develop the infrastructure capability of a growing Civil and Structural department.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience of Autodesk Civil 3D, Microdrainage and AutoCAD and will be keen to mentor graduate engineers / technicians in both technical design aspects and BIM software integration.

A thorough understanding of earthworks design, below ground foul and surface water drainage design, pavement design, external works and 3D underground services co-ordination is required.

Some of the things you will do:

  • Oversee the design on multiple projects as lead Civil Engineer
  • Support the team with problem solving relating to design – this is where your depth of technical knowledge will be important
  • Building relationships across the multiple sectors we work in to plan for future work
  • Team Management on a day-to-day basis
  • Involvement in the wider elements of the business area, supporting the Director
  • Undertake all aspects of infrastructure design work on a range of project sizes across the following sectors: Aviation, Public Sector, Rail, Power, defence and Life Sciences.
  • Act as a technical authority for Infrastructure Design across all Baker Hicks UK offices.
  • Ensure project teams deliver civil and structural designs to cost, schedule and quality criteria

  • Full Clean Current UK Driving Licence
