Vertical opens a London office

Vertical Recruitment is delighted to announce the opening of a new Central London office to be headed up by Director, Brin Gleeson.

Brin was this week promoted to Director following his success as Head of Property, where he managed a team of recruiters specialising in General Practice Surveying, Quantity Surveying, Project Management, Architecture, Building Surveying and Fire Engineering.

Brin is Vertical’s longest-serving team member and has enjoyed and a successful and rapid career progression. His network in the South has grown organically thanks to his work with large multidisciplinary companies operating in the UK and internationally. Building our Southern division is a natural continuation of that.

Brin will initially provide Fire Engineering & Building Surveying recruitment services, before building a team to replicate the successful model in our Manchester office.

To maintain a high level of service for his existing client’s, Brin will complete a 12 month transition period, during which he will continue to oversee recruitment in the North West.

We expect to recruit a similarly experienced and dynamic team member to lead the Northern property division from late 2021.

Of the developments, Brin said “I am delighted to be allowed the opportunity to establish our new Southern division. Vertical is a highly respected and reputable recruitment company and I look forward to replicating the success we have had in the North. Being from Oxfordshire originally, the move is also an important step in moving back to my roots where I will be getting married in the Summer and have plans to start a family so it’s a very exciting time.”

Director James Adamson said “Brin is an extremely valued member of the team and we are thrilled that he will be the person to head up our new London office. As specialists in property, engineering and utilities recruitment, we are well placed to serve London and the surrounding areas and to help rebuild the industry post-Covid. We wish Brin every success in this next exciting stage of his career.”

2021 Vertical Salary Review in partnership with Place North West

For the fourth time, we have partnered with Place North West to survey property and construction professionals across the North West.

The Vertical Salary Review, which was completed by 637 property professionals in 2019, will explore current careers, salaries, opportunities and perceptions. It will also provide insight into the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic which has significantly impacted the commercial and retail sectors.

The 2019 survey painted an optimistic picture of the industry, with 70% of participants reporting they were satisfied with their jobs. Planning recruitment was a major growth area for the industry, reporting the largest salary increase of 12.5%. The top three industry challenges at that time were economic uncertainty, skills shortage and Brexit.

Flexible working was high on the agenda in 2019, with increased demand from employees resulting in flexible working initiatives implemented across the industry. We will be interested to see how the pandemic has exacerbated this change, as many employees transitioned to permanent remote working.

Only 25% of respondents in 2019 were female; this was fairly reflective of our industry at the time and many of our clients committed to addressing this in their recruitment and retention strategies. We are interested to see if this has led to an increase in women in property roles.

This year, we have added Fire Engineering to the list of survey disciplines. This is a growing and important sector which we look forward to gaining more insight into.

The Vertical Salary Survey has fast become a regular event in the North West property calendar and is recognised for its accurate and thorough insight. By taking part in the survey you will receive early access to the findings which has previously proven to be a useful and insightful tool for our clients and candidates.

You will also be entered into a draw to win a pass to all Place North West events (in-person and online, including Place Party) for one year.

Complete the survey here.

Coronovirus Response

Like so many others, our business is operating very differently right now. Our priority has been to keep our team and families safe whilst continuing to support our clients and candidates when they need it most.

To do this we have made some temporary changes to how we work. It would be naive to say it’s ‘business as usual’ but what we can say is that we are still very much ‘open for business’.

Due to some downturn in the sectors in which we work, we have placed some members of staff on furlough through the Government’s scheme but we continue to check-in on them and look forward to their return.

Our Directors and Management Team continue to work, offering our usual full recruitment service. As always, we are providing specialist property, engineering and construction recruitment services to reflect our clients’ needs.

Our team are working remotely but continue to be available throughout the working week and we encourage you to contact them with any queries.

Important Notice for Ltd. Company Contractors

In preparation of upcoming changes to IR35 legislation, we are working with our partners to ensure we work compliantly in line with HMRC guidelines.

We will also be working pro-actively with you, as Ltd. Company contractors to give you the support needed to manage changes and minimise any resulting effects.

What is IR35?

IR35 is a piece of legislation that tackles tax avoidance by workers, and the firms that hire them, who are supplying clients via an intermediary, such as a limited company, but who would be an employee if the intermediary was not used.

What is changing?

IR35 is not new, but there will be revisions to the guidelines and who is responsible for making sure the rules are followed. A stricter set of rules to better understand how you work on each site and a ‘determination statement’ to confirm this, is now mandatory.

Also, whereas previously it was you, as a limited company contractor, who was responsible for determining your status within the rules, this now falls with the end client with financial risk also to the company making payments to you.

What happens next?

The changes will not be officially implemented until April 2020; however, we will be working over the coming months to get ready for those changes. We have already enlisted the help of our expert partners to better understand our requirements as a business and determine a process to support our current limited company clients that ensures compliance in line with HMRC guidelines.

If you would like to discuss any aspect of IR35 please contact the office and ask for any Senior member of staff.

Vertical Recruitment secure key hire to bolster it’s Construction division

Since the company was founded in 2011, Vertical recruitment has serviced the recruitment needs of the built environment through their property and consulting engineering divisions.

Over the past three years’ we have also made a solid footprint in the North West construction market, placing managerial level candidates with national main contractors and some of the most reputable regional organisations.

Building on this success, we are happy to announce the arrival of a highly experienced construction recruitment manager in Ashley Craven.

Ash has been working within the construction recruitment sector for the past four years’ focusing on commercial and managerial placements within the North West market, whilst managing a successful Trades and Labor team. His role at Vertical will be to head-up and grow the construction team throughout 2020 and develop an additional Blue Collar division which we hope will add further value to our overall service.

With a vast amount of industry knowledge and experience, coupled with a desire to succeed, Ash is sure to make Vertical Recruitment one of the main players in Construction Recruitment in the North West.

Vertical Recruitment & Place North West Salary Survey 2019

Earlier this year we undertook our third salary review in association with Place North West. 637 North West Property & Construction professionals shared their experience of industry salaries, benefits and challenges.

We are now pleased to publish the results which are broadly optimistic. Salaries are still on the increase and 70% of respondents are satisfied in their jobs. The findings reflect what we have observed in the market over the past 12 months; there are plenty of job opportunities and the industry feels buoyant.

Flexible working continues to rise up the agenda and the ‘skills gap’ persists in some areas. Once again, Brexit makes the top 3 challenges but is cited by far less respondents than in previous years.

The report provides valuable industry insight and makes for an interesting read.
We hope you find it to be a useful tool for hiring and decision-making in your business and as an individual working in the property industry.

Keeping our team hydrated

We at Vertical Recruitment are aware that keeping our team hydrated will aid them to perform at their very best throughout the work day. As a result, we decided to invest in watercoolers from AquAid.

Our unique relationship with AquAid has also given our company the opportunity to help those less fortunate than ourselves, because with each purchase an automatic donation is made to the Africa Trust.
These funds are used to build ‘Elephant Pumps’ – a modified version of an age old Chinese rope pulley system. One such pump is currently being installed in Africa on our behalf and it will be a much needed source of clean and fresh drinking water for many.

Our organisation’s name will be proudly displayed on our well and we look forward to adding a photo and letters of thanks from the villagers to our site in the near future.

To date AquAid have built over 8,000 such Elephant Pumps across parts of Zimbabwe, Malawi and Liberia; and have donated in excess of £15 million to charity.
